A reason to smile (:

Recently, i've been reading on this particular organization, POSWITH and i felt that there are many things Singapore or rather all other NPO and SEs can learn from and adapt.

POSWITH is a social enterprise which employs people with disability who are marginalized members of the society. Basically what they do is that the members help out in POSCO's paperwork for HR, Work service, public welfare, general affairs and also operates washing machine to help employees of POSCO to wash their laundry.

What i've mentioned above was the job opportunities given to the members BUT what really impressed and attracted me was the CULTURE that POSWITH had. They have an organization culture which is filled with gratitude and positive feedback. I feel that this is very important because it helps to boost the esteem and morale of each other, especially those who are disabled, this creates a heart-warming and welcoming environment for everyone to be in.

Not only that, POSWITH also engaged their employees where they form the 'One Family Volunteer Group' where they encourgaes their employees to regularly visit the facilities for the disabled and households with the disabled every month to assist the disabled in showering, studying and doing laundry. They have also managed to sign the MOU with 16 different groups and school for the disabled!

I personally feel that such culture should really be adapted in Singapore's NPO/SE. POSWITH reflects a very heartwarming and selfless culture where they give with all their might and try to bring about the greatest benefit to their beneficiaries.

*POSCO refers to "Pohang Iron and Steel company" and is located in South Korea. Other than POSWITH, POSCO has 4 other social enterprise arms. *

  1. Hello Kiah Gek,
You have an interesting post. Like what you mention, other than their good social model but they have a very friendly and welcoming culture within the organization. I believe that any organization, be it a corporate business, social enterprise, etc, with such a culture will definitely attracts employees. If I were to think as an employee’s perspective, I will definitely wish to have an environment which is very positive and supportive, rather than shooting down on myself. To add on, I feel that Singaporeans in general may not be very welcoming or rather being shy which do not reflect a nice side of us to others. Thus, if such a culture is implemented in Singapore’s companies, it will definitely encourage all the employees.

  2. Hi Kiahgek (:

I want to share with you another NPO – with SE arms that I have personally work with, the NPO is Society for the Physically Disabled. Their SE arms also employs people with disability who are marginalized members of the society. They have really good skills in book binding and making notes books and diary etc. What impressed and attracted me about this organization is also the CULTURE!!! Days when I went down to SPD to volunteers the staff there never fail to make me feel welcome and heart-warming! Even the manager of the team would frequently approach us to ask if we need anything or are we coping well. And also when we talk to the staff there they are all very happy and especially staff in the production workshop, they are so adorable and what surprised me the most is that they have worked in SPD for more than 10 years! One of them worked for 40 YEARS!! :D They mentioned that SPD is like their second home *touching* and I really feel that if all organization could be like these 2 organization, half of the social issues would be prevented. Do you agree? (:

    Cheers,
    Jia Ning
